CHICAGO, IL – A 33-year-old Chicago man died Thursday, days after he was struck by lightning while fishing at Whalon Lake Forest Preserve in Naperville. Guillermo Navarrete-Quintana was fishing with his 13-year-old son at the preserve on Labor Day when he was hit.
Navarrete-Quintana died Thursday, the DuPage County Coroner’s office told the Chicago Tribune.
Naperville fire officials said Navarrete-Quintana was found face-up in the water roughly 15 feet from shore, “pulseless and not breathing,” but had a pulse by the time he arrived at Edward Hospital.
At around the same time crews responded to Whalon Lake, police received a call about a male with an injured leg, who turned out to be Navarrete-Quintana’s son. Officials said the teen hurt his leg while trying to get a jogger’s attention to get help for his dad.
The son was also taken to Edward Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
